Port Orchard WA Real Estate

Port Orchard water viewPort Orchard real estate owners and visitors alike are often awestruck by the natural beauty and the variety of landscape encompassed by the South Kitsap County area. Waterfront properties abound due to the miles of salt-water shoreline and lakes in Port Orchard. Numerous real estate parcels with glorious views dot the town facing either the panoramic Olympic Mountains to the west, the Cascade Mountains to the east or Mount Rainier to the South. Home owners with a love of boating in their blood, enjoy the multiple marinas downtown. It is an area of mild temperatures ranging from the mid 40's in January to the mid 70's in July and August. Rainfall averages about 52 inches a year , keeping the landscape green year round.

Port Orchard WA real estate owners enjoy the benefits of living at the heart of Kitsap County. Port Orchard is the County seat and has been since 1892. A long history of active politicians and Port Orchard business leaders has kept Port Orchard real estate at the forefront of Kitsap County development since 1886 when it was originally platted by Frederick Stevens. That's not bad for a town that was owned by Bremerton only 100 years before, and was purchased for a mere $900!

Port Orchard residents regularly host events for a diverse collection of organizations. The Chris Craft Rendezvous will boast it's 20th anniversary in 2009. It is a wonderful trip back through time viewing this collection of the boatbuilders art. The Cruz car show, another annual event, brings in hundreds of restored classic cars. The Fathoms 'O Fun Carnival and parade has been a yearly event since 1968, often drawing a crowd of up to 60,000 people. And the Seagull Calling Contest is so unique it has been mentioned by Jay Leno and KING5 Evening Magazine!

Sydney WA, Slaughter County?

Port Orchard wasn't always known by it's current name. It was orginally named Sydney, Washington, and was located in a county that was originally named Slaughter County (but that's another story!). Sydney Washington was named for the father of an Illinois inventor who, upon a visit to the area, decided it was the perfect location to create a town, and purchased 88.5 acres to follow his vision. The Sydney Hotel, in downtown Port Orchard still bears the original name. Sydney was officially renamed Port Orchard in 1903.

Port Orchard is named for the body of water between Liberty Bay and Agate Pass in the north, to Sinclair Inlet and Rich Passage in the south. This passage of water was named by George Vancouver for his ship's clerk, Harry Masterman Orchard. The town was platted in 1886, and was incorporated on September 15th, 1890. It was the first in Kitsap County to be both platted and incorporated.

The first newspaper in the county was established in 1886 by A.H. Stroufe and Thomas Cline. It was called The Kitsap County Pioneer. The first school in Sidney was built in 1889. Sydney became the county seat in 1892.

In 1908, the Legislature appropriated the monies for a new Verterans home. Port Orchard residents pooled their resources and purchased a 31 acre parcel of land overlooking Puget Sound. They then successfully lobbied to have the new Veterans Home built there, and donated the property. The Retsil Veterans Home still operates on the original site today.

Port Orchard's first water system was on Black Jack Creek in 1911. Electric lights first appeared in 1912. By 1915 Port Orchard had 266 telephones.

Marie provided me with excellent service. A true professional with a great eye for detail and an unbiased opinion. She puts her customers first and good follow through even after the sale has been made. It was a pleasure working with her. We will definitely recommend her to friends and relatives.

Marie did an outstanding job of coordinating all 3 parties - myself, the listing agent and the sellers, despite the occassional lack of cooperation by the sellers and the listing agent. Marie tried her best to make the transaction less painful.
